Berna es la capital federal de Suiza y del cantón del mismo nombre; la ciudad cuenta con 125.000 habitantes y 350.000 su área metropolitana. Está bañada por el río Aare (Aar), que juega a hacer meandros en el interior y alrededor de la ciudad y fue declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco en 1983. Berna fue fundada por Bertoldo V, Duque de Zähringen y Rector de Borgoña, último duque de la dinastía, que murió en 1218. A principios del siglo XIV se unieron las ciudades-estados de Lucerna. Zurich y Berna para formar la primera Confederación que logró, en tres ocasiones, derrotar a las fuerzas de los Habsburgo. A finales del siglo XV la Confederación sumaba trece cantones. La Guerra de Borgoña en 1470 y la victoria en la Guerra Suaba en 1499 dieron a la Confederación una cierta independencia del Imperio. Los soldados suizos fueron reconocidos como casi invencibles (la Guardia Suiza del Papa se fundó en 1505). La Confederación obtuvo su independencia real y total en 1815, con el status federal organizado durante la ocupación napoleónica del país. Desde 1848, los cantones suizos forman un estado federal con el nombre de Confederación Suiza. Berna es la capital federal desde 1834. Aparte de su capitalidad, Berna puede presumir de su monumentalidad turística. Paseando la ciudad pueden admirarse la Torre del Reloj, el Palacio Federal (sede del gobierno y del Parlamento), la Catedral (que se construyó entre 1421 y 1893), el Parque de los Osos, el Jardín de las Rosas (con una estupenda vista de la ciudad y del meandro del Aar), el Zentrum Paul Klee (donde se expone la obra de este pintor), el Ayuntamiento, sus calles y casas medievales y… más de cien fuentes.
